Wow, what causes the fish to jump out of the water like that? I've never seen such a thing.

Wow, what causes the fish to jump out of the water like that? I've never seen such a thing.

They're an invasive species known as the Asian carp and they react to the vibrations caused by motor boats which serve as a feeding stimulous. They've been a huge problem in the Illinois River for a few years and are basically starving out native species of fish by out competing them for food; Asian carp have ravenous appetites.

The bow method is a bit extreme for my tastes, but we have a major problem here in the Potomac with Northern Snakeheads, so I guess whatever it takes to quell the population of the invaders.....

In the Illinois River? How far south have they gotten, do you know? We float/fish the Illinois River here...although it's much to small to have a powerboat on it.

Check these links out, Ryan. They'll fill you in a little about what's happening and what the EPA and various groups are trying to do to manage the problem:

it has become a huge problem as PeeWee said.
I do think if the coast guard saw this on a lake or river they would probably arrest or ticket the hunters :D
These Carp have destroyed our eco systems, well those and those Zebra's.

If you see one by all means fish for it. I prefer a more humane method, but what ever floats your boat. It is a nice little fight on a fly rod and they go for any streamer.
