It just so happens that a close friend of mine (who is a gaming nut) has both PlayStation 3 and XBox 360 as well as the Nintendo Wii. Here is what he says about them.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both the PS3 and the 360.
XBox 360 is reasonably priced and has a large selection of games and software available. The problem is that far too many of them are melting down. The service record on them hasn't gotten better since its been out as one would assume it should.
It was a bit shocking how much better the PlayStation 3 looks than was anticipated. It has noticably the best graphics or any gaming system, the most power, and blueray capability. Unfortunately it is still priced ridiculously high and there is a shortage of games and software available. Sony is really heavily invested in the PS3/BlueRay which was more or less a joint effort. I don't think they are going to let it die. It should pick up once the Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid games are released.
The Wii has a large selection of games, interactive gameplay, suitable graphics and the most reasonable price of the three systems. No wonder it's kicking the pants off the other two platforms.

I'm a big fan of the X360. Haven't had any of my friends break their 360's yet, and the meltdown thing is really a moot point - MS have extended all warranty's on them to 3 years, and have corrected the fault, so its not something to worry about.
It just rubs me the right way - the online play is fantastic, and makes playing with old friends in other cities nice and easy. Xbox Live is miles ahead of Nintendo and Sony's efforts.
Its also got Gears of War, and the Halo franchise. I have lost so many hours to Gears playing with friends round at their place - and I don't even own the system! (My flatmate does)
Also, the Ace Combat series is coming to the X360. As a plane guy, that excites me mighty-much. Add to that some decent Gran Turismo competitors (Forza 2, Project Gotham) and some huge titles coming later this fall (Mass Effect, Bioshock, Assassins Creed) - all of it spells winner for me. I plan to pick one of the "Elites" up just prior to Halo 3 shipping.
/nerd rant over.

I had a Xbox, and now have a PS3.
The Xbox was cool, and has nice games, but i am a playstation guy. The controls are more intuitive for me, and being able to have a blue ray player was / is a nice option.
My Xbox broke down, and I had GREAT customer service with Microsoft. I was floored, very good.
End of the day it comes down to what you like. I like the playstation games, although Gears of War and Halo are great, I am not an online junkie either.
So, I would go with the PS3,.....
The Wii is pretty freaking innovative though...:D
I played both and have been out of gaming for a few years. I keep going back and forth, but it seems the PS3 is the way to go or is it LOL?
I am a fan of sport, tactical and racing games. It looks like it is 6 one way and a 1/2 dozen the other.

The only game I ever play is EA Sports yearly edition of FIFA. I've seen it on the 360, but have yet to see it for the PS3. I too like the PlayStation controlers quite a bit more.

I have an Xbox (the original one) and I will not allow myself to get any of the new ones. I get obsessed with the games and waste too much time playing them. Time I could be picking. :o
