I posted this in another forum as well. I wanted to hear what you guys had to say about it as well.
Process Over Product…
In the recent years there’s been a change in the way that people are exposed to music. The distribution through the internet, share-communities and social networks has enabled the “Indie” music segment to thrive and expand. No longer are record companies and production studios required to make and distribute an album.
This change seems to have shaken the listening public some as well. In some cases the focus is no longer on finding music you enjoy, but instead music that no one else has ever heard of.
Many of these artists are revered because of how they produce their music as opposed to on the basis of the music itself…Process over Product.
What do you guys think about this?
Please discuss…

I've become very sour to the music industry today. I detest rap and don't even consider it music. Country has become generic pop that all sounds the same. Rock has become over-processed heavy guitar crap that again sounds generic and the same. Boy, I'm sounding a lot like my father when he was talking about music in the 80's when I was growing up. So it's probably not the music but me maturing.
Besides I'm still discovering great old jazz and blues artists every day so why bother with the new stuff. :p

I think the technology thats allows us to make things too perfect has sucked the life and soul out of music. Sadly, I don't think there will ever be another great band like a Zeppelin, because the "industry" would never sign and promote a band like that now.
If you think about it, we were lucky to be exposed to alot of great music through the years, but I'm afraid those days are over. Everything thats released today, with a few exceptions, will have all of the mistakes taken out and the pitch corrected electronically, which takes the life out of the music.
Can you imagine the great old Blues recordings using Protools, all slick and polished? It just wouldn't be the same.

The primary issues that I have is when praise for an artist is based on the Process through which they create music as opposed to the musical Product itself. In some extreme cases the end product is something that isn't musically appealing on any level.
I can't help but smile to know that people have found a way to be successful in the music arena while avoiding recording labels and big-wig production companies. However, when I hear some of the "Hot Artists" at various indie sites across the web, I can't help but cringe at what they're turning out.
Just because a guy plays the didgeridoo (sp?) in the shower doesn't mean that it's good music.
Am I making any sense???

Wait a minute, who doesn't enjoy a good didgeridoo solo once in awhile? .......
Just kidding, I'm not even sure what that is.
