Ok so I really don't know -that- much about guitar effects. I'm borrowing a book from the library about them, reading up but I'm curious about some suggestions. I don't have money for starting a pedal collection quite yet, but I'm curious as to what pedals I should try out along the way.
I currently have a single Boss DS-1 which is ok but pretty limiting in terms of tone definition just by itself. I was thinking of trying out the following:
MXR Phase 90
Vox Clyde McCoy
Dunlop Crybaby 535Q
Ibanez Tube Screamer 808
(some kind of flanger)
(some kind of octave)
Suggestions for any of the above catagories would be much appreciated.

I don't think you can go wrong with a wah or tubescreamer for your first pedal. I think many start here, and end up in really deep trouble :D
This might be the only thing a Guitar Center is good for. I would head over to a local one with a few hours to spare and start playing. You will find they have just about everything except for the boutique stuff, and then in some cases they will have a Klon LOL
If you need help let us know!

+1 to the Tubescreamer. Its an industry standard, and both the TS9 and the TS808 are very useful.
Second to that, they can be, and are used as a reference point in just about every overdrive discussion you will read on message boards like these. Knowing what a tubescreamer sounds like will be important for you to get the most out of these websites.

You might try a delay they are fun to jam with. I suggest try as many as yu can at the stores and go with what you think sounds good. Enjoy

Does anybody have experience with Danelectro? They look kind of flimsy and at the average price ($30.00 to $100.00) I get the impression they're not that good. I was thinking about a Danelectro octave at least, something like $40, would be cheaper and easy to add to my pedal collection, as I'm on a budget right now.

Check out the Bad Monkey!
It gets great reviews, is cheap and you can get some tone out of it.
Otherwise, go for a used TS9 on Ebay.

Howdy!
Welcome to the forum!
Sounds like you are just starting out?
What type of amp do you own?
This makes a lot of difference in the type of pedals you will want to use with it.
Also what type guitar and what type music are you playing?

Yeah, been playing for 6 months, started lessons a few weeks ago.
Guitar: 1995 Fender Stratocaster MIM
Amp: Roland Cube-15
I'm really looking for something that can give me a Hendrix-esque tone without really being too fuzzy. I was thinking an octave would be helpful in that. The Big Muff I tried at my friend's house gave too much distortion for my taste. Anything that might give my amp a little more tube feeling, something smooth and warm would be good. I'm mainly looking for suggestions and what to try in the coming weeks, I'm not sure if I'll buy anything right away.
And thanks everyone, I'll definately try out a TS 808/TS9/BadMonkey.
Anyone have a preference between Clyde McCoy and CryBaby? Or should I just try them both!

Those danelectro pedals are great- really good pedals for the money. I have the fab distortion and fish and chips EQ- I'd recommend both. They have flimsy boxes, but they are time tested circuits that sound great.

I use a DanElectro Daddy-o and a Digitech Bad Monkey in front of an old Ampeg amp and really enjoy the sounds I'm getting. until I'm in a position to aquire the tools I'm learning about here and saw at ToneFest (chicago) I figure they'll do.

I agree ! The Daddy-o and the Bad Monkey are a lot of bang for the buck.
