Here is a project that was just recently completed at our shop that is a perfect example of a job that we are doing for more and more clients as time goes on. A lot of players play strats or teles, but it is so difficult to find that 'one' that really stands out and is exactly what you're looking for, and even the Custom Shop stuff these days just isn't up to par.
An option that is open to you through our shop is to have us construct an instrument out of pre-fabricated components, and basically put it together. There is obviously a tremendous amount involved from taking these pieces and putting them together so that everything lines up, matches, and overall just knowing what works well together to get that specific, special tone that you are looking for.
We primarily get most of our pre-fabricated necks and bodies through Allparts. We get the necks unfinished and unfretted so that we can spend some time rounding and smoothing over that machine-made feel that those necks will typically have, as well as being able to top it all off with our renowned, meticulous fretwork. The bodies can be finished or unfinished, but we prefer to get them finished since there are such a wide variety of choices, and to help keep cost down.

This neck in particular is going to be getting a oil finish as opposed to a nitro lacquer finish, but we offer the option of both. Neck finishing with nitro typically runs about 125$, whereas the oil finish costs basically nothing. This Neck will be getting a full Fret Job and also we are replacing the cheesy plastic inlays with Abalone and Mother of Pearl dots.

It takes a lot of measuring and time to get everything lined up perfectly. We put a Hipshot bridge on this as opposed to a tremolo by request of the client, two humbuckers in the electronics (Lollar Imperials), and a custom request for the electronics as well, which required us to get in a blank pickguard and mount everything by hand. Pickguards are available in a wide range of combinations and flavors, and if you can get one premade completely, you will save a lot in cost.

Here is the body all drilled for the bridge, and the cavity completed with routing for the humbuckers and a full shielding job inside. We used both shielding tape and paint to get maximum conductivity.

Here is the custom pickguard, done by hand.

And here are the electronics -
-2 push/pull pots for independent volume controls
-coil tapping in individual pickups
-treble bypass cap on each for less muddy volume rolloff
-3-way switch
-Jason Lollar Imperial Humbuckers (beauty)

We pride ourselves on our tight, clean, professional-grade electronics. This is the entire wiring assembly - only one additional ground wire will be added to complete the entire circuit with all the shielding and string grounds from the body.

And here is the finished product! This turned out absolutely gorgeous, not to mention the playability, and sustain that will last all night long!

We use a special 'vintage' type of bone for our nuts that has not been bleached and is therefore softer(not as brittle), less porous, and buffs out to a mirror finish(with the right TLC involved).

These tuners are the new TonePro Klusons that we have been hyping a lot here at the shop. The turning is smoother than any other tuner, they're more solid, and overall just better quality than any other of the Klushon stuff that has been made in the past. Beware though, vintage players, because they don't yet offer a vintage bushing in the 6-in-line models, so if you want 'em it'll require some drilling!
**We are a direct dealer of TonePro parts and can get anything from them, including parts from their custom shop where they offer options such as relic'd finishes and more!
Peace all! We will be attempting to keep updating our blog on a weekly basis with cool new projects or articles that are highly interesting and educating for the working or hobbying musician. Stay in tune!
