Anyone have any firsthand experience with these pickups? I've only read reviews but would like to hear thoughts from users or former users of these pups. I'm planning on swapping my original '55 P90s out of my R6 (once I get half a free moment from my gig schedule) and would like to replace them with something less expensive but with a similar tone and definitely better than the stock pickups I removed in the first place.
I'm also up for any other recommendations of small winder pickups if you think they're of quality, be they Fralins, Wolftone, etc.
Many thanks for your time..........

Sorry PeeWee no real experience with Lollar, though I do have friends that swear by Lollar, but they nor I are really hip to his P-90's.
Just curious if you given any thought to the new S. Duncan P-90 rails that they showed at NAMM? I'm sure I have the name wrong, perhaps someone that was there can enlighten me.
They supposed to cover three sounds (I know, I know) rail for strat, P-90 and blended for a bucked sound,.
There's a vid on myspace somewhere that shows them - I'm kinda, just kinda mind you, interested in them as I took some coil taped bucks out of a Brian Moore and replaced them with P-90's - thinking seriously about changing yet again - and why not?

Hey PeeWee,
Unfortunately I don't have any experience with Lollar's P90's but if the two custom pickups I have in my Nash telecaster speak anything to his typical standard of quality, I'm sure you won't be the least bit disappointed.
Top notch all the way.

I sent an inquiry out to Jason yesterday about his P90s and asked a number of questions regarding resistance readings, fit, wax potting or not, sheilding, special winds and cover tint. I have to say that I've never received such an indepth response from a winder in my life! This dude is serious about his craft and obviously loves what he does.
Jason addressed each of my questions and then some and provided jpgs as well as text. My questions about resistances were answered by him providing 6 different options with details of each wind and how they'd be best used depending upon playing habits and style. Unbelieveable!
I've had other maker's pickups and have asked questions about other's products but none have supplied me with anywhere near the info that I received from Jason Lollar. I don't see how I can miss by getting a set of his pickups.

I don't see how can either - sounds like you got what you needed from him to cast away any fears.
It's always good to hear a positive response on any builder. I've had a few unconcerned builders that I've bought from, but I'd say most of the smaller companies sure know that it helps to give your potential customer what they need.
had a wonderful experience earlier this year with Mark Bartel from Tone King - though I've yet to pull the trigger, he was more than gracious and even offered to send me an amp just to demo since I'd have a 5 hour drive to do so. . . . and we all know you just can't get the feel of an amp till you gig it.
Let us know when you get the pups installed, perhaps I'll just go that route in my Moore.
Question PeeWee - do these fit a standard Humbucker cavity or are you putting them in something that is already set up for P-90's

MD -
They're going into a 2001 '56 Goldtop reissue that I have. That thing was my main guitar when I was on the road from '02 through '05 and I played the life out of it. Back in '06, I had my #1 repair guy bring it back to life with a total refret, a new nut and ne bridge and saddles. I'd always had a love/hate relationship with the stock pickups, so I swapped them out with a set of original 1955 soapbars. While these pickups sound killer, I get a little uneasy sometimes taking the guitar out with a set of pups that are worth about as much as the guitar itself!

Good luck with the Lollars, PeWee. Though I don't have any firsthand experience with them, I have only heard good things about them.

It's always comforting when you get stuff like that from a maker.

Lollar makes great pickups.
My personal favorites are from Dave Stephens.
His Zephyr Soapbars are just beautiful with fantastic string separation:-

The SD Strat pups are great sounding. My friend, Karl Angerer, is featured in one of the audio clips. Karl is the guitarist with Kansas City Bluesman Lee McBee and his band, The Confessors.
Welcome to the Hub, Greg_G!

Thank you !
I've been a member for a while, but there was never a lot of action here. I decided to do my part to help that by posting where I could....
There seems to be some great people here and I'd love to see it crank up !
Back to the pickups - Dave Stephens was great to work with when I ordered from him, and he's obsessed with producing the best pickups with the most original parts he can source.
I have the Zephyr + and it really is sweet.
There is a wait on his pickups.

I own a new Collings 290. Great guitar with Lollar P90S love the tone. Now if I could just get the Snake Oil Strings I ordered. (Where are they shipped from Mars?) I could see what that combo sounds like. I own many guitars and the Lollars sound so good I hardly ever play the other guitars now.

Hey PeeWee - the worship leader at my church has a 90something LP special with Lollar 90s in it. I *love* playing that thing when he lets me! The stock Gibby pups it had, which I liked a lot, sound like mud in comparison. The lollars have all the growl you'd expect from a P90, but are also very clear and articulate. There's good, chimey overtones with them as well. If I ever get a P90 axe, it'll get Lollars.

I own a lot of guitars. Just got the Collings 290 about 2 or 3 months ago. I hardly ever use my other electrics anymore. The lollars just have clarity and definition. It's is hard to use the other guitars now. I just ordered the lollar pre-assembled pickguard for my Strat. The Blackface set with a Special in the bridge. Looking forward to it. You mentioned you have '55 pickups in your R6. Are they real 1955 pickups, or the new "copies" ?

Sorry for the late reply; I just saw this post.
The pups are the real deal with the original covers and leads. I bought them about 3 years ago from a guy in NJ after looking around for a few months. Great sounding pickups! I went as far as pairing them up with a NOS set of Sprague .022uf/400v bumblebee caps that I'd found outside of Chicago and then added a quartet of CTS 250K pots that have been matched to within 5%. I think about the only negative thing I can say about that setup is the 60 cycle hum I pickup in certain rooms - just a wee bit noisey but that's a trade off when choosing a single coil pickup.

Thanks, guys! I have a thing for it myself :D
I'll be using this very rig in the studio this coming Sunday in Harrisburg, PA. I'll be a sideman on a few tracks for an old bandmate's next release; playing a couple of tunes in a Howlin' Wolf vein, so what better choice to reproduce that tone? Just like Hubert!
