I wanted to get a review up as quickly as possible. You guys can probably imagine how crazy the last week has been, so getting a undisturbed night let alone 2 or 3 with a new amp is diffiuclt.
I did manage to get 5 hours with the amp this week.
The first thing I noticed right off the bat was how well the powersuck technology worked. The tone doesn't change, only the dB's. I was really attracted to this feature as it will allow me to grow with the amp and allow me to apply it to as many venues as I ever get a chance to play in.
The second thing I noticed was how well it took to pedals and not just BJF pedals. Bjorn said it eats them, and he is so right. Most amps I have played have thier tone and stomping on a pedal seems to give you different flavors, but the pedals always seem to sit on top of the amp tone, they never become one. With the MP the pedals and amp become one, it is strange and a wonderful experience. You can run your board through the effects loop or through the front, the MP is built like a tank.
The amp it self is solid, not a single expense was spared. YOu get what you pay for and then some.
I think it is safe to say it will take me many years to find all the tones that lie inside this beast. I can't imagine ever getting bored, and so far every tone I have found has just been amazing.
Some people have said that the amp is too good, you can hear every note, etc. I think it is interesting in that you find yourself forgetting about the amp and thinking about your playing, it really changes the way you play as everything is heard.
The boost feature is fantastic and I can see many people never needing a pedal at all.
I never got into the direct plug in to the effects loop which allows you to access the secret tone. This was one of the things I was really excited about, so I plan on doing over the weekend.
I also never got into the FET section of the amp.
So what else can I say?
I think the Mad Prof team have created a very special piece! I think it will change the way many players approach tone and their playing.
This one is a grand slam home run!
Thank you to BJorn, Harri, Eero and Dean for getting this done for me!
If anyone in Chicago ever wants to hear or play it let me know and I will arrange for it to be at Make'N Music.
I will post a follow up in the next few days.
One last thing, Ben Harper is a Mad Prof user. He uses his in a way that most of us never will, wide open :)
I encourage everyone to pick up his new album and check him out on tour this summer, not only is Ben a class act, but seeing the MP in action with lap steel is a treat.
