I'm usually not using much in pedals but tomorrow I'll be playing a private double gig (two bands) and will use a small set up of LP Special, Pro Jr. amp and the following pedals: Barber Direct Drive, Boss Compressor/Sustainer and Boss Tremolo. Which would be the best sequence for the pedals? I think the comp should come before the OD bur where should the trem be? Thanks

ST,
Everything I've read as well as tried says that the Trem should go at the end of the pedals you are using.
My board starts with wah - compression (modded Boss) - two OD's (Boss Blues Driver's) - Trem (Dano) - it goes on from there, but that seems to have worked just fine.

About every 6 to 9 months I'll take my board apart to try some new thing and play with my pedal order, but I keep coming back to the tried and true.

Good luck at the gig - High School 'Battle of the Bands"?

Thanks for your advice Melvin. No, it's just a private garden party. Weather doesn't look too good today, though.

Two bands at a private garden party, must be some party.

Outside gigs can always be dicey.

Hope it works out today - the other band plays dinner music I guessing?

Everything went well. Sky was cloudy but it didn't rain until the party was over.
Pedal order worked fine. Both bands are playing in the so-called "classic rock" vein - lots of Beatles, Stones, Santana, some Eagles etc. Though I was an invited guest I couldn't enjoy much of the party because of my double duty (which I shared with the drummer). Amost the only time I was off stage was when we all were eating. :D

What'd you end up running, Tom? I'd have gone guitar > comp > DD > trem > amp - though I'd have probably experimented with swapping the compressor and the direct drive. Compressor into dirt pedal gives killer, singing sustain - definitely would work well with Classic Rock and Slide :)

And was that an LP special with P90s?? I want one.

Exactly, Steve: comp into DD into trem (which I only used for the Beatles' "Don't Let Me Down") into Pro Jr. halfway up. I hadn't used the comp for years and got into it again but then again found that it's a bit of a "sterile" sound for some songs that need a bit more raunch. The LP is a Special DC Faded model, yes, with P 90s. A bit of a "student model" - the bare essentials, but a great rock and blues guitar - very resonant, maybe due in part of its lack of a "real" finish.
Now that I might be using more than one pedal from time to time I' ll have to get some short patch cords.;) Thanks for your interest.:)

Man.....do I ever love the middle 8 in "Don't Let Me Down"! What else are you guys playing, Tom? Is this with The Roosters?

Ya know, I've always had a very hard time getting a comp sounding "right" with guitar - not so squishy sounding. About the only thing that I ever got a decent setting on my old Dyna Comp was when I ran it with my former 4001c64 bass. Perfect tone, especially for the mid-period Beatles stuff ('65 - '67).

I picked up a SansAmp Bass Driver DI a few months back for a few small venue gigs in which I double on bass and guitar. When I use the Bassman settings and my Hofner, it completely nails that "Abbey Road" bass tone that Macca got......wonder if I should try it with the Dyna Comp??

Hi PeeWee, here are the setlists:
The Roosters:

Things We Said Today
Almost Cut My Hair
You Can't Do That
Sweet Home Alabama
Drive My Car
Long Cool Woman
Come Together
Revolution (single version)
Cocaine
Black Magic Woman
Instant Karma
Badge
Samba Pa Ti
Don't Let Me Down
Brown Sugar

DAT:

C'mon Everybody
When I'm 64
I Feel Fine
Tequila Sunrise
Something
Lyin' Eyes
Michelle
Layla (unplugged version)
One After 909
New Kid In Town

The SansAmp stuff can sound pretty amazing. I have a TM 30 combo that I use for practice at home and even recorded direct with with amazing results. As for a comp: like I said: sometimes it's a good thing and sometimes it sounds artificial - I really haven't come to terms with it yet.

Lots and lots of Beatles tunes; ever consider doing a tribute band? Just doing the music and not necessarily donning the costumes and such. Could be very cool.

Samba Pa Ti is a bit of a surprise, too. I love the early Santana material! Wish the band was still more Latino influenced musically. I still believe that the two best performances from Woodstock were Santana and Sly & The Family Stone. So much energy in those two sets and it transferred to the audience as well.

There are already a couple of Beatles tribute bands here in G., good ones, too.
The reason we're doing so much Beatles material is because we're having a hard time finding other stuff that'd fit into our "classic rock" tag, so we always come back to the Fab Four, not the least because of their great song catalogue - suggestions for other songs are always welcome :D! I will try to get the other guys into "Jet Airliner" - the Steve Miller version, that is. There is a great live performance by the author of that song, Paul Pena on youtube, you should check it out! As for Samba, the guys in the band always wanted to do some Santana tunes but couldn't because their former guitarist wasn't able to do that type of stuff, so when I joined they all jumped on me with Samba and B.M.W.

This sounds interesting . . . . . . . . .
I'll go through our most recent set lists and see if I can offer anything up.

We recently added Nowhere Man - which is great for me - after listening to George's guitar part I decided not a single note more would be needed.
