Ok so I posted this on the Pearl Jam forums also and I'm just trying to figure out what's best/safest for my amp:
So I need a new set of power tubes for my Traynor. Anyone know if there's any difference between a 6L6GB/6L6GC tube and if it makes a difference for amp performance? The YCV40 says it uses 2x 6L6GB sovteks, and I'm just wondering if I should get that exact tube or if some other kind of 6L6 will work equally well?

The 6L6GC is a more powerful version of the 6L6GB. The 6L6GB is a straight sided version of the 6L6G, which has a "coke bottle" type shape to it. A 6L6GC is designed to handle better than 50% more power than than other 6L6 tubes. You can sub the GC for any of the other 6L6s, but never sub a lower rated tube in an amp that requires the use of a GC - so yes, you can use either. Also make certain that whatever tube you decide to use can handle the plate voltage in your amp. Using the GC will probably give your amp a slightly different tone, so if you like the current tone of your amp, go for the GBs.

For modern production 6L6's, the SED "Winged C" (formerly Svetlana) are a pretty decent 6L6. I'd go with a set of those. They are listed on this page.

That "GB" number is some Russian bullshit. Most currently manufactured
amps come with the ubiquitous Sovtek (Reflektor) "5881 WXT" (which isn't
a 5881, and "WXT" doesn't mean anything) installed. Real 6L6GBs haven't been
made for years. Try a set of the Reflektor/Svetlana 6L6GC or some of
the SED "Winged C" 6L6GCs.
