View Full Version : Output tubes
Hi,
What's your preference to output tubes and why?
There are many amps that can take different tube in the outputsection and sometimes this can be a cure to what may bother you.
Can we hear some preferences?

I love the Vox sound and 18 Watt Marshall types too.
EL84s have been the ticket for me for some time.

I've been spoiled with the "flexi-bility" of my THD Flexi-50, being able to mix & match output tubes of many kinds. I replaced the stock Chinese EL34's with JJ KT77's and absolutely love the "darker" vibe with a tad more "punch." Distortion breakup seems a bit smoother than the 34's, and this amp allows me to go from Marshallesque distortion to Fenderish squeaky clean with a simple roll off of my volume knob. Gotta try mixing a EL34 with a KT77 next. The tonal possibilities are endless...:D

I'm a big EL34 fan. The current production "Winged C" ones are what I tend to use as my baseline, and all others are judged based on them. For example, I like E34Ls when I want more highs and lows compared to the Winged Cs.
Although, when I've got an amp with external bias measurement and adjustment, anything goes! That's when I'll start getting into the KT66s, 6L6s and all that...
I'm very interested in trying the new KT77s, too.

Winged "C" EL-34s matched by LV's mighty hammer are what I usually use in my Komet 60. I also enjoy the early preproduction EH 6CA7s and some old Svetlana 6L6s (engineering samples) too. FYI my JJ KT-77s blew up very quickly out of the chute so I'm through with those. I don't like JJ tubes much anyway too dark for my tastes.

Hi !
VOX sound & EL84 valves
are also my preference.
But IŽd like to have a 6V6
guitar amp too.

6V6's are my favorite for the way they sing when overdriven. I also like 6L6's for fat clean tones and EL34's for grinding distortion, but if I had to chose one I'd go with the 6V6.

7591: dynamics, dynamics, dynamics - imagine a high power EF86
KT66: in cathode biased amp. Smoooth operator.
6L6GC: dependable workhorse, whipped cream
EL34: when I was younger, so much younger than today...the only thing available then...do they really make them like they used to ?
KT77? I'll up the stakes: KT99
Not seen in guitar amps...yet:D:
EL156: I should build a single end class A 25W amp with this baby. Perhaps the ultimate harp amp.

Lately it's been 6L6's. All of a sudden I've got 3 amps based on these tubes
I also love the 6V6. My Carr Slant6 is pure tone heaven.

I dig my Slant 6V as well! Nice to know there is a fellow Carr user here.

IMO one of the best amps built today! Sometimes I don't play it for a couple weeks and when I plug in I just smile :) I doubt I'll ever get rid of it.

i dig 6550's for the high power & tight crunch when overdriven. i also really like KT66's when i want a thicker, smoother tone.
i run them in a Flexi, as well.

It has taken most of my life to understand that I love EL84s. When I had my Guytron I didn't realize how much the pair shaped the tone for the EL34s. I now have a Vox w/EL84s. :D Me likey.

I love a Fender with 6V6s but when it comes to British amplification, it's EL84s all the way.

I love em all.
7591's in an old Ampeg -definition of a large tube in small tube
blackplate 6L6's in a large tweed.
6CA7's in a Hiwatt. Crisp!
EL 34 Mullards(real ones) in a MP. Almost a sonic cliche.
7027's in a VT 40 or B-15. Loud, warm.
still looking for the perfect 6V6
Mullard EL84's in a Vox type amp
